Last night I read a document about my 5th Great Grandfather, Holiday Haithcock, born around 1750, who fought in the American Revolution and his initial application to receive a pension as a veteran was denied, even though fellow soliders that fought with him served as witnesses during a pension hearing.
This comment struck me from one of the witnesses that was sent to Washington DC:
"On examining the case of Holliday Hethcock of N.C. for pension under act of June 7, 1832, we find that his services and identity are fully proven by three witnesses, and that his case has been suspended merely because he was a free man of color. As we understand that several cases of this sort have been admitted, you will oblige us by having it admitted."
His family eventually received his pension.
